Lee Matasi Memorial Service
A memorial service was held at the Leeside Skateboard spot in the afternoon of December 7th, 2005. Hundreds gathered in the tunnel beneath East Hastings street to listen to speeches and remember the life of Lee Matasi. The tunnel, orignially made famous by Lee who turned it into an unofficial skatepark as a youth, had been transformed into a shrine in his memory (see the tribute artwork below). Speeches were given by family members, friends, and school teachers against the backdrop of a large portrait of Lee that had been painted on the previous night. For further details on the memorial service, please read the Vancouver Sun article or another article by the CBC. |

On September 13th, AntiSocial hosted a tribute party for Lee Matasi and Rachel Davis. Rachel was the victim of a similar tragedy a few years ago. Hundreds of people came to celebrated their lives. Many skateboarders skated in the back of the shop which AntiSocial had transformed into a skatepark specially for the party ("how Lee would have liked it"). Others socialized, ate and drank in the front of the shop which had been decorated by tribute artwork for Lee and Rachel. It was a great night in memory of two great people. |
